Ibisevic scores and scores and scores
Even Vedad Ibisevic is getting uneasy. "I'm starting to frighten myself" says Hoffenheim striker Vedad Ibisevic after hitting two more in the club's 3:1 away win at Köln. His two goals - his fifth brace of the season - was just like a normal day at the office.
And that away win put TSG 1899 Hoffenheim back at the top of Bundesliga tables.
"I don't think too hard"
It's getting to be a real habit. Playing for Bosnia in midweek, Ibisevic scored a couple more in their 4:3 win over Slovenia. In addition to his five doubles in the Bundesliga this season, giving him a tally so far of 16 goals in just 14 games, he can also lay claim to seven assists. He laid on the Demba Ba goal which started Saturday's goal rush.
"Sixteen goals is incredible. I don't think too long. I have a lot of confidence, because I am always in the team," he says of the season to date. "I am enjoying my time with this great bunch here. They make it easy to score."
"He scores from every chance"
The man is a phenomenon. After two moderate years in Germany, Vedad Ibisevic has exploded. Team mates can only shake their heads: "He's incredible. He's always in the right place and right now he can do anything he wants. He's on a roll and hits very one home," says Tobias Weis.
Gerd Müller holds all German goal-scoring records. The legendary Bayern striker has a total of 365 Bundesliga goals to his name and 68 for the German eleven. His forty goals in the 1971/72 season have never been matched. So far.
Müller's record not an issue
"Okay, if you calculate up my tally, then 40 goals could be possible," Vedad Ibisevic acknowledges. "But I'm not thinking about that at all. It isn't even my aim. I just want to enjoy the current wonderful situation, keep on playing and to win every game."
He knows who Gerd Müller is, but remains modest: "I can't compare myself to him, I never saw him play. He's a great figure," says the 6 foot 3 inch Bosnian.
A bit of history
Vedad Ibisevic is only the fifth player to have scored 16 goals or more at this stage of season. Gerd Muller, of course, leads the pack with 20 in 1968/69 and 19 in 1967/68. Peter Meyer managed 17 for Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1967/68 and Köln's Dieter Müller hit 16, like Ibiservic, in 1977/78.
But none of them could maintain that scoring rate. Gerd Müller added "only" 10 more to his 14 game tally of 20, nine to his 19 goal haul while Dieter Muller "only" added eight to his 17 early season goals. Peter Meyer who got up to 20 before the winter break was the unluckiest of all. He broke his leg and was unable to play in the second half of the season.
Ibisevic stays modest
Vedad Ibisevic has already secured one record. He's the first non-German player with 16 in 14 games. "I didn't expect this. I'll just keep playing without any pressure and see what happens," he says. And he also refuses to think about Hoffenheim winning the title.
But he adds with a smile: "Our aim was just to stay up in the first division. That makes it easier for us, because we can just play without any pressure. And that's what we plan to do." Let Hoffenheim's rivals beware!
