Allegri hints at upcoming Juventus points penalty in top four race

The phrasing Max Allegri used after the win over Cremonese suggests he too realises Juventus are likely to be docked points before the end of the season, putting their top four status at risk.

This evening’s 2-0 victory in Turin allowed them to consolidate second place in the Serie A table on 69 points, three clear of Inter in third and now eight points ahead of fifth-placed Milan.

With only three rounds remaining in the season, they would in theory need just one more point to mathematically secure Champions League qualification.

However, Allegri’s comments to DAZN and Sky Sport Italia afterwards suggest he is well aware that could all change once the Federal Court of Appeal gives its verdict on May 22 in the capital gains scandal.

“We need to consolidate second place on the pitch,” said the coach.

This is because he knows that the points tally could still change, with reports the 15-point penalty that was suspended on appeal will be reduced to nine, as that is what the FIGC prosecutor had originally requested.

If confirmed, it would send Juventus down to 60 points, where as things stand they would be in fifth place behind Milan on 61.

It is possible that if the Rossoneri continue to fumble results after the 2-0 defeat to Spezia, then Juve could still qualify for the Champions League even with a nine-point penalty.

The club was found guilty of systematically inflating transfer fees to boost capital gains, that was confirmed on appeal, so they will be penalised, just not by 15 points.
