As ever, two of the biggest stories in the Sunday papers surround Premier League champions Manchester United.

The Mail on Sunday run with the claim that Sir Alex Ferguson has pulled out of the chase for Alexis Sanchez (heading to Barcelona) and Sami Nasri (off to Manchester City) and will concentrate on two major targets for Manchester United this summer: Wesley Sneijder and Luka Modric.

Manchester United have been linked with both Sneijder and Modric throughout the summer and it is no secret that they are looking to improve in the middle of the park following the retirement of Paul Scholes and their second Champions League final defeat in three seasons to Barcelona.

Perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson’s new found spending power this summer can be attributed to a report in the News of the World which claims: “Manchester United are to open talks with Nike over a world record new kit deal worth an astonishing 400 million pounds.”

The Sunday tabloid add “The US sportswear giants pay £23.5m a-year” but Manchester United owners “the Glazers have seen the deal dwarfed in recent years and want to ensure the club are top earners again.”

Manchester United defender John O’Shea is reportedly very close to joining Sunderland for £3 million, according to The News of the World.

The versatile centre-back, who can also play on the left or right-hand side of defence, has spent twelve years at Old Trafford, but is apparently about to join Steve Bruce at the Stadium of Light.

Manchester United are understood to have accepted an £11m offer from Sunderland for O’Shea, Darron Gibson and Wes Brown, but talks with the latter two have been complicated by the pair’s wage demands.

O’Shea, 30, has reportedly grown unhappy with a lack of first-team football at Old Trafford, especially with the signing of Phil Jones and the development of Chris Smalling, and seems to feel that a move away will help his career.
