Chiesa: ‘Dedicated to Vialli, Juve keep raising the bar’
Federico Chiesa dedicates the Juventus victory over Udinese to Gianluca Vialli and warns the Bianconeri must ‘keep raising the bar’ after eight consecutive wins.
There were emotional scenes before and after the match at the Allianz Juventus Stadium, as Gianluca Pessotto read out an open letter to his former Juventus teammate Vialli, who was also part of the EURO 2020 staff under Gianluca Mancini.
“Our first thoughts go to Gianluca Vialli. He was a wonderful person and I was so lucky to cross paths with him in my life, as he was a real champion, but above all a marvellous human being. At the Euros he really was like an extra player, he was on the pitch with us.
“We could talk for hours about what a great man he was. The victory is for him,” Chiesa told DAZN.
The Bianconeri secured their eighth consecutive Serie A victory, all of them with clean sheets, thanks to a late tap-in from captain Danilo at the far post.
Leandro Paredes floated a ball over the top for fellow substitute Chiesa to chest and volley it across the face of goal, finally getting the better of Udinese.
“Unfortunately, I was out for 15 days during the training retreat and the coach didn’t want to risk me in the friendlies, so I am a little behind schedule. The coach can use me wherever he wants, I am ready to play in any role. I also told Dani he could come and hug me, he’ll do it later!”
Chiesa sustained that devastating anterior cruciate tear practically a year ago to the day and is only now starting to get back on the pitch as a substitute, hoping to soon make his mark in the starting XI too.
“It has been a very difficult year for me, but I’ve put it all behind me, I have to work even harder to get back to my best and help the team achieve our objectives. We didn’t start well, but we’re back on track now.
“As the coach says, we have to keep raising the bar, because eight wins in a row isn’t enough, we have to keep doing better.”
Allegri: ‘Juventus have fitness and mental strength’
Max Allegri insists the reasons Juventus continue to scrape late victories are down to ‘fitness levels and mental strength,’ but remains cagey on their Scudetto ambitions.
It was again left to the final minutes, but once more the pattern repeated itself with a narrow victory and a clean sheet, the eighth in a row in Serie A, beating Udinese 1-0 in Turin.
Federico Chiesa redirected a Leandro Paredes ball over the top with a chest and volley for Danilo’s tap-in at the back post.
“We are in a good period of form, but we must raise the bar in terms of performances. We didn’t have the right concentration against Cremonese, it was better with Udinese who are a strong side and we had more chances in the second half,” the coach told DAZN.
“We brought home the win late on because of good fitness levels and also mental strength. Technical skill is crucial, but if you don’t have that desire to give that little bit extra and get there a few centimetres before your opponent, you don’t win these games.”
Allegri was asked if Juventus should try to start their matches with a bit more intensity rather than wear opponents down until that sprint finish?
“We were a bit too hasty at times with our crosses and passes. In the second half, McKennie was in a more central midfield role and we put more pressure on, so he has different characteristics playing wide and we knew there could be difficulties, but that the game would improve as time wore on.
“Manuel Locatelli struggled a bit today coming off a draining experience in Cremona. Paredes can become an important player above all if he plays to send his teammates on goal, as he has such great vision and I think he needs to pick those passes more. He’s more than capable of it, so he needs to improve on those choices.”
Pending tomorrow’s results, Juve are now temporarily four points shy of leaders Napoli.
“We started slow and therefore have to keep working. This is an important win, because it consolidates our position in the top four.”
Allegri was visibly furious in stoppages and was booked for dissent as he was screaming at his players and the referee.
He also saw Angel Di Maria limp off with a calf issue after spending several minutes doing stretching exercises on the pitch.
“Di Maria played 60-70 minutes at a good level, he played well and I am happy with all the lads, who showed heart and hunger. Once we start playing every three days, we will need everyone in good shape and ready to play.”
The Bianconeri have kept 12 clean sheets in the opening 17 Serie A rounds, matching a record set by Cagliari in 1966-67 at this stage of the tournament.
Next week it is the big showdown with leaders Napoli, who suffered their first Serie A defeat of the season against Inter.
“Napoli are still clearly the favourites to win the Scudetto, they have a big advantage, whereas we want to consolidate the top four. We’re almost halfway through the season and are doing well.
“As I said, raising the bar means the performances rather than the results or targets. We have to take it one step at a time, focus on working and achieving the minimum objective, which is a top four finish.”

Massimiliano Allegri was fuming on the touchline minutes before the final whistle of Juventus–Udinese as he wanted his players to handle the ball more wisely.
The Italian tactician was unhappy with how his players were handling the ball in the final minutes of the match.
The Bianconeri had broken the deadlock only a few minutes earlier through Danilo and Allegri expected his lads to keep the ball in their feet, without taking many risks.
However, he didn’t see what he expected and made sure his lads knew he wasn’t happy. He was seen screening meters outside his technical area and, for this reason, the referee booked him.
Juventus have now won eight games in a row without conceding and are four points below Napoli, who have a game in hand.
Allegri said at the end of the game that the Partenopei are the favourite to win the title.
On Friday, the Bianconeri visit Luciano Spalletti’s side at the Stadio Maradona.
Jmedical "slavi"...Allegri gives injury update on Di Maria
“His performance was extraordinary on a technical level, in the second half he had a couple of marvellous moves. He is a player on another level,” said the coach.
“It was just a bit of cramp, nothing to be too concerned about. It’s normal after playing 65 minutes when he had been off the field for 15 days.”
Najedi se kolaca...
Happy birthday, Manuel!
A second birthday in black and white for Manuel Locatelli, who turns 25 today.
Luca Pellegrini dreams to join Lazio, who have opened talks with Juventus for a loan with option to buy. Juve would like to insert an obligation to buy upon reaching certain conditions.
