Vedad Ibisevic: Always back on his feet
Vedad Ibisevic has gone through many trials. But Ibisevich is a man who gets back on his feet, who fights and who believes in success. The second half of the 2008-09 Bundesliga season was the stage on which he proved it.


With 18 goals in 17 games he shot his way out of the second string of the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim squad and into the spotlight of the league. The magical 30 goal mark seemed to be within reach. Not since Gerd Müller s performance in the 1973-74 season had anyone broken this "sound barrier.”

Nothing Disasterous

And then it happened. The Bosnian suffered a serious injury to his cruciate ligament at the newly promoted side s winter training ground. End of season! Yet another setback. He had already suffered so many. "Disaster happens, but this was no great tragedy. We used to play football and have to take a break while the bombs fell,” he recalled.

Ibisevic was still a boy when his family was forced to leave their old homeland of Vlasenica at the beginning of the Bosnian War and move to Tuzla. At the local club Proleter Slavinoviæi, Ibisevic began to play football. He soon made a name for himself and eventually became part of the young talent at the top flight club Zmaj od Bosne. But the aftermath of the war also caught up with the family there, and they emigrated to Switzerland.

USA: Detour and opportunity

Less than a year passed before the next move, this time to relatives in the U.S. In St. Louis the boy quickly found his footing and dribbled his way into the notebooks of the American scouts. He made it into St. Louis University and went on to play with the youth development at the MLS club Chicago Fire.

He might have spent years chasing after goals in the land of American Football and Baseball if it hadn t been for football legend Michel Platini, whose attention was drawn to the lively striker during a match between the Bosnian youth team against Macedonia.

First Bundesliga appearances for Aachen

Eventually he signed a contract with the renowned club Paris St. Germain. But there too, his career did not seem to get properly off the ground. After only four appearances, he left for second league Dijon FCO during the winter break of 2004-05.

In 2006 Ibisevic made the change to Alemannia Aachen and into the Bundesliga. In 24 games, he featured mainly as a substitute, scored six goals and was relegated together with his club at the end of the season. Even after his change to Hoffenheim, Ibisevic remained only the third choice striker for a long time. But injury problems at the beginning of 1899 s debut season in the Bundesliga cleared the path for him into the starting eleven.

The rest is history. But in the coming years, he wants to be the author of his own destiny. One thing is certain: He has no intention of clearing the stage.
