There’s a bit of a Prince Charles vibe around Daniele De Rossi. Nicknamed ‘Capitan Futuro' after bursting onto the scene with his boyhood club, Francesco Totti’s remarkable longevity means the 33-year-old is still waiting for his chance to ascend the throne, to be crowned as the new King of Rome.
For a time, it looked as though De Rossi’s destiny would go unfulfilled. While Totti remained a decisive figure for the Giallorossi - albeit often from the bench - some questioned whether his heir apparent was really worth his lavish pay packet anymore. Until Gonzalo Higuain’s move to Juventus this summer, De Rossi was the best-paid player in Serie A, but his performances were coming under increasing scrutiny.
As Rudi Garcia’s reign sputtered to its end in a series of draws, there were whispers that the boy from Ostia was no longer up to the task; slowing the game down too much for Mohamed Salah and Juan Iturbe to make their presence felt.
It was mooted that De Rossi would see out his €6.5m per season contract and move to Major League Soccer, earning a big payday in the States rather than leading club and country. The last 12 months, however, have shown that there is plenty of life in the combative midfielder yet.
The arrival of Luciano Spalletti brought about a revival in the man who would be king, and he is once again a key figure for Italy and Roma.
If the season started inauspiciously with a stupid red card against Porto - discipline has always been the one weakness in De Rossi’s game - the veteran is now arguably the Giallorossi’s key man.
Anchoring Spalletti’s midfield, the football scores and statistics show De Rossi leads the team in interceptions, and is second only to Kevin Strootman with his 2.6 tackles per game. However, while the Dutchman may make 2.7 tackles, he gives away over two fouls a game on average, compared to just 0.5 for the Italian.
De Rossi also leads his team in terms of passes per game and long passes per game, an indication of the faith Spalletti has shown in him to build the Lupi’s play.
For Italy too, the 33-year-old is once again a key player. At Euro 2016 this summer, Antonio Conte’s side was badly devoid of creativity, with Marco Verratti injured and Andrea Pirlo a long way from his imperious best.
The former Juventus Coach therefore handed the regista role to De Rossi, and he excelled as the Azzurri breezed through a difficult group before swatting Spain aside. However, an injury against La Roja meant De Rossi couldn’t face Germany in the Quarter Final, and Italy were eliminated on penalties.
“If we’d beaten Germany then I’m convinced we’d have gone all the way,” Conte told Gazzetta dello Sport last month, and it’s hard not to think that the Azzurri could have done just that had De Rossi been fit and available.
Last weekend saw De Rossi play his 400th Serie A game, and it’s perhaps only fitting that the lifelong Roma fan’s road to 500 will begin with a clash with Lazio on Sunday. It may be Totti who takes great pleasure in “purging” the Biancocelesti, but De Rossi is the epitome of the derby gladiator, knife between his teeth in a midfield battle to the death.
Totti is an exception, the likes of which we may never see again, but De Rossi has his own claim to legendary status. Time will catch up with Er Pupone eventually, at which point his understudy will become the undisputed icon of the Curva Sud. For his country too, De Rossi has racked up over 100 caps, where Totti quit on 58.
Not everyone can play beyond their 40th birthday, but it’s not unreasonable to think De Rossi can play on for another five years. He may have time to emulate Totti in leading his club to a Scudetto, and he’ll relish the chance to add another World Cup medal in 2018.
He may still be Capitan Futuro, but De Rossi is very much the present for both club and country.
