Manchester United are preparing to make a bid in excess of £25million for Mats Hummels, with the Borussia
Dortmund captain expected to follow Jürgen Klopp by leaving the German club at the end of the season. United are also optimistic about their prospects of signing Memphis Depay, the PSV Eindhoven and Holland forward, and Nathaniel Clyne, the Southampton and England right back, as the club prepare for another makeover this summer. The trio are likely to cost a combined fee of up to £70million.
A total of 21 players who were in or around Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team squad have left Old Trafford since the Scot’s retirement almost two years ago and the figure is expected to hit the 30 mark by the end of the summer, with about ten more departures expected. Louis van Gaal is targeting at least four new players and United are keen to tie up business quickly to give the manager ample time to bed any new recruits into his squad.
Hummels is a leading target for United, whose prospects of signing the centre half were given another boost yesterday with the news that Klopp will leave Dortmund after seven years as coach. A World Cup winner with Germany last July, Hummels will shortly enter the final two years of his contract with the German club and the 26-year-old admitted again last month that he could leave the club in the summer. United’s approach was rejected out of hand when they inquired about signing Hummels last summer, but Dortmund’s position has weakened in the wake of a calamitous season. Tenth in the Bundesliga with six matches of the campaign remaining, Dortmund — Champions League finalists in 2013 — could miss out on European football altogether next season. Nonetheless, they are likely to demand more than €45million (about £32 million) for Hummels. United have also been linked with Marquinhos, but the Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain defender reiterated his desire to “stay long” at the French club yesterday after signing a one-year contract extension last month to remain with the French giants until June 2019.
PSV are resigned to losing Depay— who played under Van Gaal for Holland at the World Cup finals in Brazil—and United lead the chase from Liverpool and a host of other clubs for the promising 21-year-old, whom Phillip Cocu, his coach at PSV, has likened to a young Arjen Robben. Comfortable on either wing or as a supporting forward, Depay — who would cost at least £20million—is the leading goalscorer in the Dutch Eredivisie this season and has 25 in 36 matches in all competitions. Fast, strong and skilful with a predatory instinct and supreme self-confidence, Depay came off the substitutes’ bench to inspire Holland to a 3-2 victory over Australia with a goal and an assist before scoring as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Chile in the group stage of the World Cup.
Clyne is also interesting Chelsea, but United believe that they are in pole position to sign the 24-year-old, who is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at St Mary’s.
A central midfielder remains a priority signing for Van Gaal, but the United manager has altered his sights in recent months because Kevin Strootman, of Roma, his preferred target, has been ruledout for the rest of
the season after suffering a setback in his recovery from a left anterior cruciate knee ligament injury.
With no plans to turn Radamel Falcao’s loan move into a permanent deal and given Robin van Persie’s
uncertain future as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract, United are also in the market for an established striker.
Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos, the goalkeepers; Rafael Da Silva and possibly Jonny Evans, the defenders; Tom Cleverley and Nick Powell, the midfielders; Nani, the winger; and Javier Hernández, Ángelo Henríquez and Will Keane, the forwards, are all likely to leave United this summer.
There are also doubts over David De Gea, the goalkeeper, who has yet to sign a new deal amid interest from Real Madrid, and Andreas Pereira, the Brazil Under-20 midfielder, who will soon be out of contract.

@sbates_people reports that Di Maria has told LvG that he intends to stay at United and fight for his place.
Mislim da je zavrsio sa Unitedom. Vec sada nema mjesta pored Younga, Di Marie (ceka se naredna sezona da prikaze bolju igru), Mate kojeg Luj u zadnjem periodu cesto izvlaci na krilo, Valencie te eventualnog pojacanja (Depay).Nani stated he did not have to go on loan but did so to further his career. “Louis van Gaal gave me the option to go. I could have stayed but I chose the best option for me at the time and I think I was right,” he said. “I am enjoying my game again. Football is the best thing in my life. Football has given me everything and when I play I really enjoy myself so I want to play all the time. That wasn’t happening at United. When I don’t play I am very disappointed.(guardian)
